David Hovey, Jr. graduated from Cornell University in 2001 with a B.S. in City and Regional Planning and continued with Optima Inc. as a construction superintendent and project manager. In 2004 he received his Masters of Architecture degree from Illinois Institute of Technology and founded Optima DCHGlobal Inc. in 2007 with the intentions of developing a sustainable architectural building system that uses standardized components to enable customized buildings to be built efficiently any location, climate, or terrain.
Hovey Jr. designed and developed the DCHGlobal Building System while working on his master’s thesis at Illinois Institute of Technology. At IIT Hovey Jr. was advised by Arthur S. Takeuchi who was also the mentor and master's thesis adviser for David’s father in the 1970’s. In 2009 Hovey Jr. completed the prototype of the system "DCHGlobal Relic Rock", a series of single family homes located in Scottsdale, Arizona. Hovey Jr.’s "DCHGlobal Relic Rock" has since won the Honor Award for AIA Chicago, the Honor award for AIA Arizona, The International Green Good Award, and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture Award. DCHGlobal Relic Rock is also featured on the brochure cover for the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali. Hovey Jr. has subsequently received U.S. and international patents for the system.
